Rojo

Social Aggregator

www.web20-poker.com by trommsdorff + drüner www.web20-poker.com by trommsdorff + drüner Rojo.com is supposed to be the best RSS-Reader in the Web. Therefore they named itself RSS-Reader with “mojo” which means luck or fortune. And indeed, it is a very efficient RSS-Reader for good and fast information.

CNet writes about Rojo:

“Rojo is a free, Web-based RSS reader that melts a conventional newsreader with a social-networking community. Like other aggregators of Web content, Rojo lets you subscribe to RSS, XML, or Atom feeds to stream news headlines, blog summaries, or even deal-of-the-day catalogue listings directly to your Rojo account.”

These are functionalities that are available in other RSS-Reader as well (neoows.com), but Rojo came up with this intelligent mixture quite early. Already in 2003 Rojo Networks Inc. invented a revolutionary system “to improve how busy people discover and consume content”. One of these busy people is apparently the one who is better known as the inventor of the internet: Marc Andreessen. The beta phase followed in 2004 and the public launch in 2005. Right after Rojo´s acquisition by web2.0 specialist Six Apart Rojo fully relaunched and changed from a very frisky to a very serious design.

The key function is doubtless the Mojo-Button which makes Rojo a social network. You can not only publish your favourite stories like in Bloglines or Google Reader but also can use the Mojo-Button to get the multi-copied Digg-effect. Under Top Stories you will find stories tagged by Rojo-Users. So due to its one-click-recommendation we put Rojo in the folksonomy category.

A very useful and actually the logical extension is Rojolicious. By using your del.ico.us username you can generate a greasemonkey script to change the mojo-button funcitonality. Now you not only rate the story worth reading but also tag it in your del.icio.us account.

Rojo is a good aproach to your daily information management and has the potential to be company used. One of the two revenue streams is Adsales which is nothing new but very often your flow of articles is interrupted with flashing ads that I just dislike and that often may lead people to change the application.
