Netvibes is one of the most useful services in the web2.0. It’s not only the starting page of your browser which immediately pops up while starting your internet session, but it’s also an extensive organizer summarising all my daily used tools such as RSS reader, instant messenger, calendar, websearch, spreadsheets, all my emails etc. And it’s even more than that: netvibes is a mighty tool which allows you to completely personalise your user interface. It’s ajax based usability is exemplary and makes it a service I always like to adjust and complete.

The French company has already more than 10mio users in more than 150 countries. Due to its more than 100 media partners netvibes offers a vide variety of services and tools. The new netvibes universe lets you easily create and share your page with other users. Meanwhile there are some universes from companies like Forbes.com, Washington Post or Newsweek. And even celebrities have their own universe like 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg or Moby I recently found. The best is geeks can develop own APIs and share them. While internet giants like Google or MSN put heaps of money into software as a service applications and even developed a naive looking version of netvibes I’m looking forward what’s coming up next from the Netvibes founder Tariq Krim.

I’m sure that with a new flush of money from Venture-Capitalists Accel Partners and Index Ventures which gave 12mio US$ last year, the mobile application “Netvibes2Go” for synchronising your mobile will become not only a successful extension of the service but also a big leap leaving competitors like pageflakes.com, and live.com behind. The very user friendly so called Webtops are just a part of the megatrend that some call “Software as a service” and others “Application Service Providing”. The Experton Group forecasty says that 30% of private users and 12% of enterprises will use webtop applications by 2010. So it’s getting cloudy for Microsoft’s offline desktop windows.
