Virtual worlds increasingly find themselves in the corporate spotlight, currently above all is the most popular representative Second Life. To learn more about news and recent developments in Second Life the Second Life Herald provides interesting perspectives. There have been positive and negative reactions concerning the media reporting about this “phenomenon”.
While the positive reports dominated the media until the beginning of the year, now a growing criticism towards Second Life can be recognized. This development could have been anticipated in advance if followed its position in the Gartner Hype Cycle. Nevertheless, the growing popularity in Second Life and Virtual Worlds in general will continue to grow in the coming years. Key drivers will be not only social aspects but also technological such as the advancements in computer technology (hardware and software) and the growing availability of broadband connections to potential users worldwide. Most outstandingly for 3D worlds in comparison to the actual user experience in the 2D WWW is the principle of proximity and distance which leads to a much more “natural” consumer experience. Things of interest can be zoomed in whereas others appear in the corner of the eye. Another distinctive principle is the enriched community experience people “feel” when engaging in group activities in virtual worlds.
Currently, Second Life is the most popular “ambassador” of the new 3D community development, but numerous upcoming alternatives will enter the online based 3D arenas soon (i.e. Virtual Me). All these “worlds” will enable users to experience totally new forms of gatherings and communications with people which in return will change the way we learn, work and meet. Online virtual worlds will add another dimension to the actual Web2.0 development and in the near future we will see plentiful mashups between 2D services and 3D worlds. |
